3. Path rule. When there are conflicting path rules, the most restrictive rule takes pre cedence. For example, if there is a path rule for C:\Windows, with a security level of Disallowed, and there is a path rule for C:\Windows\System32, with a security level of Unrestricted, the more restrictive path rule takes precedence. In this case, software programs in C:\Windows will not run, but programs in C:\Windows\ System32 will run. 4. Internet zone rule. For example, if you have a file that has a hash rule applied to it with a security level of Unrestricted, but the file resides in a folder whose path rule is set to Disallowed, the file runs because the hash rule has precedence over the path rule.

1 In the graphical view at the bottom of the Disk Management window, right-click the free space within an extended partition and choose New Logical Drive from the shortcut menu. 2 In the New Partition Wizard that appears, click Next to skip past the Welcome page. Click Next to skip the Select Partition Type page as well, where Logical Drive, the only available option, is already selected. 3 On the remaining wizard pages, specify the logical drive s size, drive letter or path, and format, just as you would for a primary partition, as described in Creating Partitions from Free Disk Space, page 675.

For software restriction policies to take effect, users must log off from and then log on to their computers.

Formatting a partition, logical drive, or volume deletes any existing files and prepares the volume for use. Normally, a wizard handles this task when you create a new partition, logical drive, or volume. You can reformat any drive or volume other than the current system or boot volume at any time. This option is a useful way to start fresh with a partition that you use strictly for temporary files, such as music files that you burn to CD. To format an existing drive or volume, right-click its icon in the Disk Management utility and choose Format from the shortcut menu. You ll see a dialog box that offers the same choices as those found in the New Partition Wizard and New Volume Wizard, as shown in Figure 18-5.

To implement software restriction policies, you must complete the following tasks: 1. Set the default security level 2. Create rules 3. Designate file types

Changing the default level affects all files on the computers that have software restric tion policies applied to them. In the details pane, the current default level is indicated by a black circle with a check mark in it. Upon installation, the default security level of software restriction policies on all files on your system is set to Unrestricted. To set the default security level of software restriction policies, complete the follow ing steps: 1. Access the Group Policy Object Editor console for a GPO. 2. In the Group Policy Object Editor console, click Computer Configuration, doubleclick Windows Settings, double-click Security Settings, and then double-click Software Restriction Policies. 3. In the details pane, double-click Security Levels. 4. Right-click one of the following:
