Application and system logs can be viewed by all users. The security log is accessible only to system administrators. As you learned in Lesson 3, security logging is turned off by default. To enable security logging, you must set up an audit policy in a GPO at the appropriate level.

Note If additional services are installed, they might add their own event log. For example, Active Directory logs events in the Directory Service log, and the DNS service logs events in the DNS Server log. The Directory Service Log is discussed in 2, Installing and Configuring Active Directory.

3 In the Open With dialog box, select the program you want to use as the default for this file name extension. 4 Select Always Use The Selected Program To Open This Kind Of File and then click OK.

The security log contains information about events that are monitored by an audit policy, such as failed and successful logon attempts. Review the security log frequently. Set a schedule and regularly review the security log because configuring auditing alone does not alert you to security breaches. To view the security log, complete the following steps: 1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Event Viewer. 2. In the console tree, select Security. In the details pane, the Event Viewer console displays a list of log entries and summary information for each item, as shown in Figure 13-12.

4 In the Actions section of the dialog box, select the action that you want Windows to take when you insert a disc of the selected content type. (If you want to preserve your options every time you insert a particular type of disc, select Prompt Me Each Time To Choose An Action.) 5 Click OK.

Successful events appear with a key icon and unsuccessful events appear with a lock icon. Other important information includes the date and time that the event occurred, the category of the event, and the user who generated the event. The category indicates the event category, such as Object Access, Account Manage ment, Directory Service Access, or Logon Events. 3. To view the properties for any event, double-click the event. The properties for a logon/logoff event are shown in Figure 13-13.
