When you connect to a streaming media server, the Player sends a log of the session to the server. This log contains your unique IP address as well as details about your connection. It also includes a unique identifier called a Player ID. By default, this ID is anonymous in Windows Media Player 9 Series and later (a change from the default behavior of the version of Windows Media Player included in the original release of Windows XP). In some rare cases, a site may require that you use a unique Player ID that is capable of identifying your computer. In that case, choose Tools, Options, and select the Send Unique Player ID To Content Providers check box on the Privacy tab. For each user account, Windows Media Player maintains a history that identifies media files and URLs you play. In addition, it keeps a list of CDs and DVDs you play. Anyone with physical access to your computer can inspect those lists and possibly draw conclusions based on their contents. To eliminate this possibility, you need to adjust several settings on the Privacy tab of the Options dialog box, as shown in Figure 19-14. Clearing the check box at the top, Retrieve Media Information For CDs And DVDs From The Internet, prevents the Player from compiling a list of discs you play. Clearing the Save File And URL History In The Player check box at the bottom disables the history list. Finally, the Clear History and Clear CD/DVD buttons erase the current contents of those lists for the logged-on user.

In the Save As dialog box, in the File Name list, specify a filename for the new security template, and then click Save. 4. In the console tree, right-click the new security template, and then select Set Description. 5. In the Security Template Description dialog box, type a description for the new security template, and then click OK. 6. In the console tree, double-click the new security template to display the security policies and double-click the security policy (such as Account Policies) you want to modify. 7. Click the security policy you want to customize (such as Password Policy), and then double-click the security setting to modify (such as Minimum Password Length). 8. In the Properties dialog box for the security setting, select the Define This Policy Setting In The Template check box to allow configuration, and then configure the security setting.

In order to produce a more meaningful result similar to the one we showed earlier, you can improve the query by adding a select clause, as in listing 5.5.

As the name implies, this installation option sets up a fresh new copy of Windows XP, completely replacing any previous version of Windows on the partition where it s set up and erasing all other files on that partition. Although you can start a clean install by running Setup from an earlier version of Windows, it is much simpler to do so by booting directly from the CD. In either case, you can use an existing partition or define and format partitions during setup.

During setup, some peripherals don t work properly. Check your system BIOS. An outdated BIOS can cause problems with disk partitioning, power management, peripheral configuration, and other crucial low-level functions. To find out whether an update is available, check with the manufacturer of your computer or its motherboard. Identifying the BIOS and tracking down the appropriate source for updates isn t always easy; you ll find detailed information at the indispensable (and thoroughly independent) Wim s BIOS (http://www.wimsbios.com). After verifying that you re running the most recent BIOS version, use the BIOS setup program to select the non Plug and Play operating system option. This advice may seem counterintuitive after all, Windows XP is indeed a Plug and Play operating system. However, this setting was intended for use with earlier Windows versions, and if it s set incorrectly it can prevent the Windows XP boot loader from accessing devices at startup.
