What bit rate is best for you It depends on how big your disk is (and how many CDs you intend to copy), how much you care about preserving the full spectrum of sound recorded on your CD, and the quality and capabilities of your playback equipment. WMA Lossless offers the best quality, but at a potentially prohibitive cost in disk usage. The WMA VBR format offers higher quality than fixed bit rates, but some portable devices and external media players designed to connect to home audio systems don t support these formats. If you intend to copy the tracks to a portable music device with limited storage, choosing a lower bit rate means you can pack more songs onto the device; however, as we ll explain later in this chapter, Windows Media Player can perform this conversion on the fly when synchronizing with a portable device, allowing you to keep higher-quality copies on your computer. For most users and typical computer speakers, 64 kilobits per second is the minimum acceptable choice, allowing for generally acceptable audio quality at little expense of disk space. The default bit rate of 128 kilobits per second produces noticeably better sound and strikes an excellent balance between disk usage and audio quality. If you re a discerning audiophile with high-quality playback equipment, you will almost certainly want to choose an even higher bit rate. To determine your own minimum acceptable audio quality, you ll need to perform comparative tests using your own ears and speakers.
